Open Shelves Solve Space Issues

Cabinetry is not all about doors, face frames and boxes. Cabinetry can encompass all the other parts and pieces that go into a design, such as corbels, shelves and moldings, which can help pull a design together. Here are some creative, functional and beautiful applications of open shelving to hopefully provide some ideas and inspire your next project!

Open shelves, such as shown above the sink, can create a more open look and are a great place to display cookbooks or a collection of plates or glassware.

In our Stamford, Connecticut, showroom, clients can see different examples of Dura Supreme cabinetry, including open shelving above the sink. This creates a more open look, and can be a great spot to showcase cookbooks, display a collection of plates or glasses or even have a few fresh herbs handy for cooking.

In this home office, floating shelves in the corner display photos and personal mementos. Opening up the corner allows for the desk to fit into it, maximizing space.

This home office space in a living area uses open shelves to maximize corner space, and display family photos and artwork.

This illustrates how shelving can also give function to a challenging space, namely corners. Sometimes with corners, designers run up against challenges, such as windows or depth changes. One way to tackle this problem is by using open shelving.

Another great application of open shelving can be to nest them right into the surrounding cabinetry, giving a purposed layered look and keeping oft-used items at the ready!

So, next time you are looking for some functionality in a challenging space, or looking for a way to bring a little extra character into a room, don’t forget about the hard-working open shelf!

An Island Oasis In Your Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the main areas in the home where people gather or entertain. A kitchen island can become a centerpiece for social activity.

Many of our kitchen designs include an island, and you may not realize how many options there are available for kitchen islands.

Some things to think about are what you want to use the island for, whether it will be a prep space, an eating area, provide additional storage and if you want a sink or appliances included.

An island needs to go with the flow of the kitchen. In this Connecticut home, this large island has curves to offer more space around it and different levels that allow stools to be tucked in under the counter. It also has an extra sink, which can be used to wash vegetables, fill pots or drain pasta closer to the stove.

This large island has an extra sink, a steamer, plenty of prep space and seating.

You don’t have to have a large kitchen to have an island, for example in this Fifth Avenue apartment, a smaller square island provides an eating and prep area. The stools can provide additional seating, a great space to sit for breakfast or a quick snack.

Islands also reflect the style of the kitchen. This modern kitchen island has a waterfall counter, that flows down one side for a dramatic look. It has two pendant lamps to provide light and stools that tuck under the counter.

Think about lighting, whether you want a larger pendant lamp, multiple smaller lamps, or a few medium-size lamps. With multiple smaller lamps, they can hang at different levels, creating an interesting look. Another option is a longer, hanging tray with candles. The style of the lighting is part of your overall look, whether you prefer a more modern or traditional style. The size of the island will impact how many lights you want as well.

Another consideration is if you want seating at the island, and the height you prefer. The basic choices are table, counter or bar height. This square island has chairs, which may be preferred for younger children or if you use the counter for work and are sitting for longer periods.

Kitchen islands provide storage, with cabinets and drawers, and can include a wine fridge or wine storage area or dishwasher. When designing the island, consider if you want to include these types of items that may need plumbing or electrical connections as part of the design. It is important to work with a designer to make sure this is taken into consideration as part of the planning for contractors.
