Create An Outdoor Space With Flair

Designing an outdoor space is a great time to be a little more adventurous, you can use brighter colors than you might usually use inside, or go with a neutral palette and then add bright pillows and accents.

Think about what type of entertaining you will be doing, whether you want a larger table to have for family meals, or lots of seating and small tables for snacks and drinks. There are many different patio furniture options to choose from.

Rooftop
A long table is perfect for a bar or dining. An outdoor kitchen, like this one shown here with a grill, outdoor sink and counter space, is great for entertaining.

Also decide if you want a variety of chairs, some for lounging, some for dining. Then pick your cushions! This is where you can have a little fun, with so many different weather-proof options. You can go with a bold and colorful design, or keep the cushions more of a neutral tan, grey or light color and use your pillow colors to pack more of a punch with bold solids or bright patterns.

Living
This rooftop lounge has a seating area with neutral cushions featuring brightly colored pillows and a firepit.

Another hot trend is outdoor rugs, which can be used on decks or patios to outline a space as well as add another dimension of design. There are many different designs, whether you prefer a geometric pattern, floral design or a solid color.

Also determine what other items you might want on the patio or deck, do you want a grill for cooking or a table fire pit for roasting marshmallows or just to add ambience. There are many different options for fire pits, whether a longer rectangular size, or a smaller circular size better fits your style.

A recent outdoor space designed by Holzman Interiors included a pizza oven, perfect for entertaining, just provide the toppings and people can make their own pizza to their taste!

Add greenery with pots of different sizes, such as a larger container with a variety of plants or a few smaller pots in a grouping. Visit a local greenhouse or garden shop to find out what types of plants will do well in your climate, and consider whether they will be in a sunny or shady spot.

If you need a break from the sun, add an umbrella to your plans. There are umbrellas that are part of a table set, or stand-alone umbrellas that can be angled to give shade.

For a fun final touch, look into lanterns or lights that can brighten up a patio party. Again, there are many choices, whether you prefer larger lanterns on the ground, a string of lights that hang from a pergola or awning, or citronella candles scattered around to provide light and keep away pesky bugs.

Focus On The Fireplace

A fireplace can be a focal point of a living room, a feature to build around for setting up seating, side tables and more.

It also can be a great place to display art work, photos or seasonal decorations.

A fireplace draws the eye and interest, and there are many options for fireplaces, they can be understated or a statement piece with a large piece of stone or a more modern design.

With a traditional mantel, a fireplace can be the perfect place to showcase large artwork, drawing the eye up in a room with high, cathedral ceilings.

For example, in a Scarsdale, New York, home remodeling project Holzman Interiors recently completed, the dark fireplace front contrasts with the white mantel. The large artwork is set off by two modern orange glass vases, for a pop of color that continues throughout the room with grey and orange accents.

The fireplace in this stunning living room serves as a focal point, and above the mantel is the ideal place to display large artwork, drawing the eye to the cathedral ceiling and windows.

Holzman Interiors works with clients to achieve their vision for their home. In this grand living room, the oversized stone fireplace works perfectly to create a seating arrangement in an open concept room. Using an area rug and a sectional couch, Holzman Interiors creates a cozy seating area within the larger space.

The stone fireplace compliments the stonework on a feature wall nearby and also the beams in the ceiling and columns throughout the room. These details bring together the design.

The white mantel over cream stone in this room matches the color scheme of blue, white and cream. With a structured look, it is understated and formal. It serves as a perfect spot for artwork, in this case photography framed by two small wall sconces.

Artwork can go with the overall color scheme, such as seen here with the blues reflected in the landscape photo, or can be a stronger statement with bold colors.

The pairing of a white mantel over a cream stone fireplace sets the tone throughout the room, with the color scheme of white, cream and blue.

A mantel also can be used to change out decorations seasonally, bringing a hint of spring in your home with different candles or decorations. It’s not just a place to hang your stockings, you can use floral arrangements or small sculptures to create a new look.

In a master bedroom, a fireplace can provide a spot to relax and unwind. As seen here, two chairs flank a small fireplace, creating a cozy seating area to read or watch TV at the end of the day.

To help keep your kitchen organized, Dura Supreme offers different drawers, such as ones with dividers for silverware or kitchen tools, or knife blocks within a drawer. A new option is a toe-kick drawer, designed for installation in the toe space of any straight cabinet, adding additional storage space. A touch-latch mechanism is included, so a simple touch of the toe will open the drawer.

The wide drawer can be used to store cutting boards, baking sheets or table linens for example. This type of solution can add more storage space without adding more square footage.

Weathered collection

Reminiscent of softly weathered wood, Dura Supreme’s Weathered collection of finishes looks as if it has been exposed to years of sun, wind and rain. Like an old drift fence, tumbled driftwood, or seasoned barn planks, each of the Weathered finishes portrays wood that has been exposed to the elements. The Weathered Finish collection includes an array of colors that evoke images of sun-bleached driftwood, charred campfires or time-worn dock planks.

Glass cabinets trends

Dura Supreme also has recently updated its cabinetry glass to target trends in kitchen and bath cabinetry. New updates include white and black back-painted glass options, leaded glass doors, and a new collection of mirror options for both framed and mullion cabinet doors.

The largest update to Dura Supreme’s glass program is the new mirror section. Choices now range from beveled mirror, antique mirror, gray mirror, bronze mirror and standard mirror.  Mirrors have been used as a decorative accent in home interiors for a long time, however, incorporating the reflective and airy look of mirror within cabinetry as an emerging trend.  Mirror used within cabinetry doors (behind mullions or simply in place of a glass door) is another wonderful way to add light within a kitchen.

Reduce Clutter

Clear Your Room And Your Mind

Having a cluttered home can be stressful and distracting, making it hard to relax. If you have an organized home, it helps you stay on track and saves you stress and time.

Creating a design that takes into account your collections or interests can help you streamline your vision. Designating spaces for items you treasure, such as books or picture frames, can help showcase them in an intentional way.

holzman_showroom-37
Open shelves in the kitchen can be used to display dishes, cookbooks, or a set, such as a porcelain teapot and matching teacups.

Curating open shelves with items such as glass paperweights, vases, candles, books or photos, can create a display that shows your personality and works in design colors and styles.

At Holzman Interiors we can help you create a vision for your home and life.

Get Organized!

  • Pick a zone and organize: Don’t get overwhelmed, pick a corner or side of a room and focus on decluttering that area and reorganizing it in a way that works best for you. Have a trash bag and recycling container at the ready so you can divide items into discard, keep, and donate or recycle. Get ready to purge!
holzman_showroom-88
Easily reduce clutter in kitchen drawers by setting up dividers and systems. Shown here, spice jars and a knife block can be used, which also helps keep counters clear. Come to our showroom to see examples of many different solutions for kitchen organizing.
  • Have storage planned: We offer storage solutions for all different rooms, whether it is a bedroom closet, a living room built-in or kitchen or bathroom shelves. For example, in a living room you can use built-in shelves to organize movies, CD collections or books. Other options include special drawers in your kitchen to hold utensils or spices, or if you have kids who use the counters for art projects, you can have a drawer set up to hold paints, brushes, paper and more.

  • Think about space saving solutions as well as reducing items: If you have an assortment of scarves, or need to wrangle ties, use a hanger to tie them on or specialized hanger to hold these items. Set up a shoe rack with levels to use the most of floor space in the closet.
  • Go through mail on a regular basis: Have a system and go through to reduce paper clutter, this is one of the things that easily piles up. If you pay bills online, cancel paper copies to reduce mail, recycle junk mail weekly. Try to just touch things one time and decide whether they need to be paid, recycled, or filed. Don’t create more piles, that just makes more clutter.
  • If you have children, work with them to keep toys organized. Go through them regularly and cycle out toys they no longer play with to donate, have storage options labeled so they can help pick up after themselves. Purchase a small bookcase or storage shelving to display sports trophies, art projects, books and more.

Foyer Sets The Stage

A foyer or entryway is a great place to display your favorite artwork. As the entrance to your home, it is the first room guests see, and should be a true representation of your home and style.

Holzman Interiors has worked with many different clients to create a showcase for artwork, creating a focal point by using lighting, paint colors and more.

This foyer in a Union Square condominium showcases the homeowner’s artwork collection.

This Union Square, New York City, condominium remodel included custom carpets and furniture. As shown, the owner had several large works of art that Holzman Interiors used to pick colors, such as for the large vase and glass bowl on the table, which complement the blue bench and blues in the artwork.

This entryway also featured custom furniture and a black and white rug.

Track lighting highlights the artwork, to let the bright colors and shapes add further dimension to the space.

Custom pieces, such as this red ostrich leather bench, can complement artwork.

This Chicago apartment entryway includes a custom red ostrich leather bench. This bench was made to bring out the bold colors in the artwork hung above it.

Having benches or consoles in the entryway is not only visually pleasing, but also functional, as you can use the bench when entering or leaving the home to remove or put on shoes. Console tables also offer places to have an entry light, or a place to put keys or mail.

Holzman Interiors also considers artwork when working with our clients to choose paint colors. Here the dark wall helps showcase the greens in this artwork and the dark wood table.
